Teens & Older Children
Is your child struggling with their mental health, experiencing bullying or has difficulties managing Autism and ADHD. Creative therapy provides tools and positive coping skills for your child or teenager to learn how to express themselves in a safe environment.
Whatever it is, therapy is a great place for them to start untangling their thoughts and emotions and understanding themselves and their world more.
Let’s figure it out
Therapy for adolescents and older children at White Pine Counselling is tailored to meet their unique needs and developmental stages. For teenagers, therapy often involves a combination of talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and expressive therapies such as art or music therapy. This approach helps them explore their thoughts and emotions, develop coping strategies, and improve communication skills.
With older children, play therapy is commonly used as it enables them to express themselves through play rather than words to better communicate their feelings. Children in therapy may require varying levels of guidance to talk, depending on their age, emotional development, and the nature of the issues they are facing. I may use interactive activities such as a sand tray, which allows children to explore their emotions using various objects to build a story or narrative within the sand tray. Older children may require more direct guidance, questions and encouragement to talk about challenging topics.
Therapy is a safe space.
Overall, the goal of therapy for teenagers and older children is to provide a safe space for self-expression, promote emotional regulation, enhance problem-solving skills, and foster healthy communication with peers and adults. I strive to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where young clients can explore their concerns and work towards positive change.
I am an integrative counsellor . Counselling works by using integrative therapeutic techniques to support children and adolescents to give them tools to communicate effectively and to better understand themselves.
In a typical session at White Pine Counselling, children can expect a neutral and supportive environment where they have the space to openly explore and discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In children's and teenage therapy, confidentiality between parents / caregivers and myself as the therapist, is crucial yet delicate. The general practice is to maintain confidentiality with the child to build trust and encourage open communication. However, there are exceptions when it comes to ensuring the child's safety and well-being which would be discussed with the parent / caregiver prior to starting counselling.
